Now that I’ve put the snow tires on my car — snow begins to fall early in these parts — I’m getting ready for two autumn conference trips. First, in mid-October, I’ll be heading to the University of Seattle to participate in the annual meeting of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA), for which I’ve organized two panels on the topic of Ecocriticism (both of which are co-sponsored by the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment). A few weeks later I’ll be heading to Tempe, Arizona, to present some research at the annual meeting of the International Conference on Romanticism (ICR). The theme of this year’s ICR conference is “Catastrophes.” My paper, which I’m busy writing, will examine Romantic author and colonial administrator Sir Francis Bond Head’s role in negotiating the Manitowaning Treaty (also known as the Bond Head Treaty) with Anishinaabe chiefs on Manitoulin Island in August of 1836. Finally, my new music project, an album called Shadows in the Light, is currently being mixed and will soon be ready for the mastering process.  The CD should be ready sometime in November, at which point its songs will also become available on iTunes and other music download sites. More news to come in this space as the project unfolds…
