We’ve just completed our 3rd day of recording at The Drive Shed, and the project is moving ahead nicely. On days 1 and 2, we recorded live bed tracks for 11 of the album’s 12 songs. Though his gorgeous Graf is always nearby, Jason has been playing a lot on an old dead-stringed Gibson that he borrowed from a friend, lending the songs a warm, rough-around-the-edges feel.  Singing with the most amazing musicians — Michael Johnston on piano, accordian, and organ; Maury Lafoy on acoustic and electric bass; Mark Mariash on drums; and Jason on guitar — is the most fun I’ve had since the Hotel des Arts. Today Christine Bougie dropped in and added red-hot tracks on lap steel and electric guitar to a couple of songs.  Then Sahra (playing Celtic harp) accompanied Jason and I for a few simple live takes of the album’s twelfth song. And finally Sahra gave some sweet violin touches to one of the songs I wrote for my father/her grandfather, to whom the album will be dedicated when it’s finished. Two more days to go.
