As of today, I embark upon a year-long sabbatical leave, during which I’ll work to meet two major publishing deadlines and–if the muses allow–write some decent songs.  My leave begins with a visit to the UK, where I’ll attend the Transatlantic Studies Association conference at the University of Northumbria.  After the conference, I’ll head to the National Library of Scotland in old Edinburgh to read some rare books and manuscripts.  When this work is done, I’ll set out with my brother Mike to hike the West Highland Way, hitting the trail just north of Glasgow and walking to Fort William (a trek of nearly 100 miles).  Weather permitting, we’ll finish our Highland excursion with an ascent of Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the British Isles.  I hope to find a song or two along the way, not to mention some decent Scottish ale.
