Yesterday evening I was a guest of the John Buchan Society at a small dinner party hosted by Lady Deborah Buchan Stewartby at the University Club in Toronto. Lady Deborah, Buchan’s granddaughter, is currently visiting Canada from her home in Scotland to raise awareness of her grandfather’s work as an author and as a former governor general of Canada, and to promote the John Buchan Heritage Museum Trust. It was a pleasure to converse with the assembled guests, who know much more about Buchan than I do (though I’m working hard to catch up). I was delighted to meet Lady Deborah, who was a gracious hostess and an articulate advocate for her grandfather’s legacy.
