On April 24th one of my new essays was published in the European Romantic Review. Entitled “Cultural Genocide and the First Nations of Upper Canada: Some Romantic-era Roots of Canada’s Residential School System,” the article is an expanded version of the paper I presented on the Indigenous Rights plenary panel at last summer’s meeting of the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism in Winnipeg. It examines an Ojibwe language poem composed in 1838 by Jane Johnston Schoolcraft (Bemwewegiizhigokwe) in light of Aboriginal educational policy proposed by Bishop John Strachan (a founder of the University of Toronto). The article is available in both print and online versions. See European Romantic Review volume 27, number 3, pages 301-308.
