Bound for Tempe, AZ, for ICR 2012 November 4th, 2012

In a few days I’ll be heading to Arizona to present some research at the International Conference on Romanticism, which will be held at Arizona State University in Tempe.  The conference’s theme is “Catastrophes,” and I’ll be speaking on “The Catastrophe of Sir Francis Bond Head’s Romantic Administration in Upper Canada, 1836-38.”  It’s a good time to talk about Bond Head, since this year marks the 175th anniversary of the Upper Canada Rebellion, which he has often been blamed for inciting.  My paper will examine Bond Head’s Romanticism, the role he played in the Rebellion, and his relationship to the Ojibwe and Odawa chiefs who signed the Manitowaning Treaty–also known as the Bond Head Treaty–on Manitoulin Island in 1836.  It will be nice to see old friends at the conference and to hear the results of their research during the past couple of years.
