Dick Hutchings–my father, my hero October 17th, 2011

I’ve spent the last several weeks by my father’s bedside surrounded by family and close friends at the Carpenter Hospice in Burlington.  Having been diagnosed with terminal cancer in August, Dad has gone downhill too quickly, and he could leave us at any time.  But he isn’t going down without a fight, for he seems to have taken a page from Dylan Thomas:  ”Do not go gently into that good night / Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”  And yet, rage isn’t the proper word to describe his battle, for in the midst of enormous pain and discomfort he stills finds the strength to comfort us, his bewildered survivors, with a rare and wonderful smile.  My Dad is my hero.
